Driving test for cars

The driving test is straightforward. It is designed to see if you can:

  • Drive safely
  • Know the Highway Code and can demonstrate this through your driving

Test routes are designed to:

  • Be as uniform as possible
  • Include a range of typical road and traffic conditions

You will be:

  • Given directions in good time
  • Asked to carry out set exercises

The driving test lasts approximately 38 / 40 minutes (Extended tests will last about 70 minutes)

The Test | Practical Test

During the driving test, the examiner will be not only be evaluating your ability to drive, but also examining how you think as a driver. Since the beginning of 2018, there have been significant changes to the driving test, which our instructors are well versed in to help prepare you. These are all designed to be more reflective of modern day driving.

Independent driving:

The pupil will be expected to drive for almost 20mins without the instructor feeding turn by turn instructions.

Sat Nav Driving:

The examiner will use his own sat nav, with a pre-programmed destination, which you will have to follow.

Manoeuvres:

The test will no longer include the ‘turn in the road’ or ‘reverse around the corner’ manoeuvres. Instead these have been replaced by the following:

  • Parallel Park
  • Bay Park, either driving forwards or reversing into a bay.
  • The examiner may also ask you to pull up on the right hand side of the road, reverse for 2 car lengths and then join the traffic again.

Your confidence in the vehicle and your competence on the roads are hinging factors in a serious of different tests of ability. If you have been trained and taught correctly, then your practical test should be no different to a normal driving lesson.

Show Me. Tell Me.

This was introduced in 2004 to ensure learner drivers possess a basic knowledge of their vehicle. It comprises of a variety of questions and are split into parts during the test:

  1.  “Tell Me” are asked at the beginning of the test. The examiner will ask how you would carry out a safety check.
  2.  “Show Me” questions are conducted during the test and involve you practically demonstrating a specific task asked by the examiner.
